I
was on Papamoa Beach when a Department of Conservation worker managed
to chase down and catch a small penguin in the surf.
Have
a look at the lengths the guy, Jerome Guillotel, went to in his
bid to save this little creature.
He
stalked the critter for about two kilometres down the beach and
then sat crouching out of sight. Whe he judged the moment was right
he sneaked up on the penguin before heading at full steam into the
water armed with a net.
He
got his target, although the ungrateful beast gave him a nip on
the hand. Jerome responded by telling him off and wagging his finger
at him.
The
bird was taken to the Wildlife rescue Centre at Te Maunga where
it was washed, cleaned and is now recuperating.
Well
done Jerome and all the conservation people saving our wildlife
from the ravages of the Rena's oil spill!
